Chapter 02 of 07 · Becoming

Community

No archive is built alone.

The rooms we build for one another: kitchens, dance floors, protest lines, prayer circles. Community is created through shared meals, conversations, celebrations, organizing, mutual care, and chosen family. These photographs honour the networks that sustain queer BIPOC lives beyond institutions and borders. Community reminds us that belonging is not something we inherit; it is something we create together.

No one arrives alone. We are carried here by one another.

Ubuntu is the breath between us when your tear adds to my prayer. It is the moment my fist finds your hand mid-chant, declaring: Your freedom is my freedom, My voice built in your echo. Ubuntu I am because we are.

We heal in circles, pieces of each other mending cracks. Your sorrow is my ache; your power enraptures me.

I taste salt on your skin The history, migration, resilience. Together we knead dough with our souls, We knead protest into the land we claim, the homes we warm Ubuntu is our recipe We feed each other’s futures. We fill each other’s hearts.
