Our mission

Resilient Voices Visual Archive is a community-led photography and storytelling project that records queer BIPOC life — particularly African diasporic life — in Berlin and Brandenburg. Too often excluded from public memory, our bodies, relationships, activism, rituals, and joy are gathered here on our own terms.

The archive is built around three acts of belonging: Becoming, Belonging, and Remembering. Each chapter moves from birth and community through expression, healing, connection to land, queer ecology, and finally to memory itself. Together they form a living record of dignity, resistance, and celebration.

Who this is for

This space is first for the people and communities whose stories live inside it. It is also an open invitation to educators, researchers, artists, allies, and future generations who want to understand queer BIPOC experience from the inside out.

How to engage respectfully

- Look with care, not curiosity. The people in these images are not symbols or case studies. They are relatives, friends, neighbors, and collaborators who have chosen to be seen. - Keep context attached. When you share a photograph or quote, include attribution, captions, and the name of the archive. Stories lose meaning when they are stripped from the people who told them. - Credit, don't extract. All materials are released under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0. You are welcome to reuse them for education, art, research, and advocacy, provided you credit the contributor and photographer and share derivatives under the same license. - Do no harm. Do not use these materials to mock, misgender, out, criminalize, or commercially exploit the people pictured. If you are unsure whether a use is appropriate, ask first. - Honor language and memory. Some contributors appear under chosen names, some under pseudonyms, and some stories are offered in multiple languages. Respect the form in which each story is told. - Offer feedback gently. If you notice a correction, a missing credit, or a concern about representation, please reach out through the contact or social channels linked in the footer.

Self-representation

The project is led by queer BIPOC with volunteer support. Editorial direction, captioning, essays, and the final decision over what enters the archive rest with the people pictured and the communities they are part of.

Open license

All materials are released under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0 and mirrored on Wikimedia Commons, making them freely accessible for education, research, and public engagement. Attribution to Resilient Voices contributors and the named photographer is required; derivative works must carry the same license.

Berlin launch

A Berlin gathering invites both the community and the wider public to engage with these stories in person — creating a lasting resource of visibility, recognition, and legacy.
